Okay, so I was a few games off. But Kevin Fucking Martin, y’all.
I knew he was going to come up big. He is the difference maker. I mean, I’m taking nothing away from the defensive clinic - wow that feels weird to say - that D-Fish put on while guarding Harden. But we’re not going to expect him to do that every game. Or ever again, to be quite honest. The 3’s he knocked down, that I do expect, though. But again, this night is about Kevin Martin.
In a moment where the Thunder really needed him in game 5, he kind of let the team down. Not that he was alone. I’m still not sure anyone made a single shot in that game. Sure didn’t seem like it. And really, and I’m not sure people who were never athletes understand this, it would have been SO easy for K-Mart to sink into the background and just be done after that performance. Confidence is everything in basketball, especially for a scorer like Martin. And when you have a game that is that important go that badly for you, it’s easy to lose all of your gumption. But not this guy. Not on this night.
Instead, Kevin Martin came out and decided to remind the city of Houston that he was a pretty damn good player and that, the beard be damned, he was on the better team now. He showed maturity and grit and absolutely won this game for us tonight. Because coming out and scoring like he did in the first half lets KD take a few breaths and relax. It opens up the court for Reggie to drive to the basket. And frankly, when a guy who used to play for you is lighting it up for another team, it takes the air out of the building. (See OKC in game 5)
Kevin Martin, I love you. I need this about 12 more times. But regardless of what happens in the rest of the postseason or offseason, I promise, no one in OKC is going to forget what you did for us tonight. #thunderup
